Variable energy surcharges create a gap between the agreed base rate and the final shipping cost. In September 2026, DPD raised its road transport surcharge from 19% to 20%. The air transport surcharge increased from 36.25% to 39.25%.

At GLS Netherlands, the energy surcharge for domestic and international parcels rose from 10.9% to 12.4%. For domestic freight it increased from 19.5% to 22%, and for international freight from 29.25% to 33%.

Carrier percentages are not directly comparable because each company uses its own products, base rates and calculation methods. The monthly figures do show that a static cost price can quickly diverge from the amount actually invoiced.

Use the full invoice as the basis for each carrier. Separate base rate, energy, toll, peak and other surcharges, and compare total costs by zone, weight class and service with the contribution charged at checkout.
