The Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation, or PPWR, has been phased in across the European Union since 12 August 2026. It replaces varying national rules with one framework for the full packaging life cycle.

One of the first concrete changes is the restriction of PFAS in food-contact packaging. Webshops and fulfilment companies therefore need to know not only packaging size and weight, but also material composition and supplier documentation.

A harmonised European labelling system for packaging will follow in 2028. From 2030, limits on empty space, restrictions on certain single-use plastic packaging, reuse targets and requirements for recyclability and recycled content will take effect.

Preparation starts with a packaging inventory: record the material used for each format, the amount of empty space, the claims printed on the packaging and whether the supplier can provide the required information.
